HVAC 1 - Basic Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning


Course content:

Principals of thermodynamics
Explain the basic vapour compression refrigeration systems.
Identify and explain the function of the components.
Extra Components in Refrigeration Cycle
Access Valves and Gauges
Refrigeration Trade, tools and instruments
Practical: Copper piping
Fridge & Freezers
Maintain safety in the handling group 1, 2 & A3 refrigerants. (R134a, R600a)
Compressor Test / Capacitors
Practical: Recover, Repair, Leak testing, Vacuum & Charging


Candidates must have basic literacy and numeracy.

This course is the first phase of training in the fields air conditioning and refrigeration.
Two week course. (Theory & practical)

Upon successful completion of this course the student will have the understanding of the vapor compression cycle / thermo dynamics.
Understanding of safe working and applying the basic tools needed to maintain the day-to-day job. This course represents the foundation level and includes a full workshop training component."

Pipe work, flaring, swaging, bending, (Copper & Aluminium pipes), tools and instruments, basic air-conditioning cycle.
Safety, refrigerants, refrigerant containers, recovering, testing off compressors, test for leaks, evacuation and charging. (Domestic and air conditioning)

10 days, Monday to Thursdays, from 08:00 to 15:30 and Fridays, 08:00 to 13:00

HVAC 3 - Air-Conditioning - Maintenance & Repairs


Course content:

Introduction to Air-conditioning
List the commonly applied air-conditioners.
Air-conditioning Cycle (Revers valve)
Refrigerants & safety
R410a Refrigerant
R32 Refrigerants
Introduction to Aircon Heat load
Practical - Sizing of units – Rule of thumb
Purpose & requirements – Heat load
Identify & use trade specific tools.
Gauge reading
Units & Prefixes
Transferring Refrigerant
Recover Refrigerants
Leak Test an aircon system.

Candidates must have done; Basic Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning, or one year experiance in Air-conditioners.

Upon successful completion of this course the student will have the understanding of fault-finding and applying the basic repairs needed in air-conditioning.
This course also helps to write a full report on a faulty air-conditioning unit.

Assume to have in place; "Registration with SARRACA".

10 days, Monday to Thursdays, from 08:00 to 15:30 and Fridays, 08:00 to 13:00

HVAC 5 - Commercial Refrigeration

Course content:

Operation of vapour compression commercial systems
Understanding various refrigerationsystem components
Fault find a refrigeration plant stoppage or failure
Belt drives, couplings and bearings
Practical – Pressure switch settings
Practical – Commissioning Cold and Freezer rooms


Candidates must have completed;
Basic Refrigeration and air-conditioning, or one year experiance in refrigeration systems.
Electrical 1


On successful completion of this course the student will have the necessary knowledge and understanding of various commercial systems of the trade.
This is the first phase to introduce refrigeration systems to students.
Understanding various system components.
Commissioning, repair and maintenance of refrigeration systems.
Pressure switch settings
Commissioning of vapour compression commercial systems

10 days, Monday to Thursdays, from 08:00 to 15:30 and Fridays, 08:00 to 13:00

HVAC 2 - Electrical 1

Course content:

Safety in the workplace / Electric
Refrigeration Trade, tools and instruments / Electric
Sketch and construct electrical circuits applicable to single phase
Install, connect and maintain electrical cables and conductors
Practical: Relay panel, Timer panel and D.O.L panel


ALL candidates must have basic literacy and numeracy.

This course is an electrical course specifically developed for persons in the air conditioning and/or refrigeration industry.
This course focuses on single phase systems - 220V.
On successful completion of this course the student will have the necessary electrical knowledge and practical skills to perform most of the electrical duties as may be required from a person working in the air conditioning and refrigeration fields.
Practica: Sketch and construct single phase electrical circuits. Relay panel, Timer panel and D.O.L panel.

10 days, Monday to Thursdays, from 08:00 to 15:30 and Fridays, 07:00 to 13:00

HVAC 4 - Electrical 2

Course content:

Safety in the workplace / Electric
Refrigeration Trade, tools and instruments / Electric
Sketch and construct electrical circuits applicable to three-phase
Fault find, repair and maintain AC motors, circuitry and controls
Inspect and maintain electrical control panels and circuitry
Practical: Star/Delta panels and testing AC motors


All candidates must have completed the Electrical 1 Courses.

This course is an electrical course specifically developed for persons in the air conditioning and/or refrigeration industry.
This course moves onto three phase systems. On successful completion of this course, the student will have the necessary electrical knowledge and practical skills to perform most of the electrical duties as may be required from a person working in the air conditioning and refrigeration fields.

Practical: Sketch and construct electrical circuits applicable to three-phase. Star/Delta panels and testing AC motors.

10 days, Monday to Thursdays, from 08:00 to 15:30 and Fridays, 08:00 to 13:00
